Nerve Pain Supplements at Walmart: How to Read the Shelf Labels

Quick answer

At a store shelf, ignore the front claims and turn the bottle around. The Supplement Facts panel shows the real lines, amounts and allergens. Check for a proprietary blend, a missing total, shellfish and bleeding cautions. We have not verified a Nervecept listing at any retail chain, so use its own label as the practice example.

At the shelf01

What should you read first on a shelf bottle?

The back. The front is advertising, and the Supplement Facts panel is where the product is described.

The front of a bottle can say anything a company can defend as a "supports" statement. Anything stronger would make the product a drug in the FDA's eyes 1. The panel, by contrast, must list each line and its amount.

We have not verified a Nervecept listing at Walmart or any other chain, so we use its label here as a worked example. The order page is on where to buy.

Worked example02

What does a real panel look like?

Tap or hover the numbered spots to see what each part of the panel means.

Tap a number to read that part of the label.

  1. Serving

Serving size 1 capsule; 30 servings per container.

  2. Glucosamine Sulfate 500 mg

The largest line: 500 of the 699 mg printed (71.5%).

  3. Indian Frankincense 67 mg

Boswellia serrata, listed as the herb: 9.6% of the 699 mg.

  4. Chondroitin Sulfate 50 mg

    7.2% of the 699 mg.

  5. Turmeric 50 mg

Curcuma longa, listed as the root: 7.2% of the 699 mg.

  6. Quercetin 8 mg

Sophora japonica, listed as the bud: 1.1% of the 699 mg.

  7. Methionine 8 mg

    1.1% of the 699 mg.

  8. MSM 8 mg

Methylsulfonylmethane: 1.1% of the 699 mg.

  9. Bromelain 8 mg

Ananas comosus, listed as the stem: 1.1% of the 699 mg.

  10. Daily Value

Footnote: Daily Value (DV) not established.

Why the allergen line counts04

Why does the shellfish line matter?

Because glucosamine is often made from shellfish shells, and shellfish is a major allergen 4.

Nervecept's panel prints Shellfish (Crayfish) on its contains line. If you have a shellfish allergy, talk to a provider before use 5. Whatever you buy, a missing allergen line on a glucosamine product is a question for the seller.

  • Look for the line after the Other ingredients.
  • Read the capsule material too: here it is hypromellose with rice flour.
  • Ask a pharmacist to read the whole label with you.

Next step05

What should you do before buying anything?

Photograph the panel and show it to your clinician or pharmacist. Pain, numbness and tingling deserve a doctor's visit 6.
